Chemical and biological oxygen demand studies

Chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD) measure how much oxygen the organic matter in a wastewater will consume. Anaerobic design uses them to size the digester. Aerobic design uses them to size the polishing step. Discharge limits are often written in the same units.
A study specifies the sampling points, the method, and the period. A single grab sample is not a design basis.
